How do you rank in Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews pull from pages already ranking in the top 10 organic results plus pages with strong structured data (FAQPage, HowTo). To appear: rank organically for the underlying query, format content with clear question-led H2s and direct first-paragraph answers, and use schema markup that maps Q&A explicitly. AI Overview presence requires SEO presence first.

AI Overviews build on classic SEO

Unlike ChatGPT or Perplexity (which use independent retrieval), Google AI Overviews source from Google's search index. If your page doesn't rank in the top 10 for the underlying query, it likely won't be cited. This means AI Overview optimization layers on top of traditional SEO, not as a replacement.

The Overviews-specific lift

Among pages that already rank, structured data is the biggest differentiator. Pages with FAQPage schema appear in Overviews 2–3x more often than equivalent pages without. Pages with HowTo schema win citation for "how to" queries even when ranking 5th or 6th organically. Schema is the cheapest leverage available for Overview presence.

Recency and updates

Google's models prefer recently updated content. A 2024 article rewritten and re-dated for 2026 frequently displaces newer content with the same information. Our AI Overviews guide covers the structural patterns and refresh cadence that move citation rate.
