The Experiment
I gave 10 different AI tools the same prompt: build a landing page for a fictional project management tool called "Trackline" aimed at engineering teams. Same product description. Same feature list. Same target audience. Same competitive positioning. Then I scored every page through roast.page without telling it the pages were AI-generated.
The tools ranged from dedicated AI page builders (v0, bolt.new, Lovable, Durable, Mixo) to AI coding assistants used in builder mode (Cursor, Replit Agent) to AI-assisted design tools (Framer AI, Wix ADI) plus a ChatGPT-generated HTML page for good measure.
The results surprised me. Not because AI was bad — it wasn't. Some of these pages looked genuinely professional. The surprise was where AI excelled and where it failed. The pattern was so consistent across all 10 tools that it stopped being about specific products and started being about what AI fundamentally can and can't do with landing pages.
What AI Gets Right (Consistently)
Layout and visual structure: A-
Every single AI-generated page had a competent layout. Clean hero section, logical section ordering, proper visual hierarchy, responsive design. Most used sensible spacing, legible fonts, and color palettes that didn't make your eyes hurt. If you'd shown me these pages five years ago, I would have assumed a junior designer made them — and that would have been a compliment.
This makes sense. Layout is a pattern-matching problem, and pattern matching is what large language models do best. There are a finite number of "good" landing page layouts, and AI has seen all of them. The hero-features-testimonials-CTA structure is well-represented in training data. So the output is reliably decent.
Component quality: A-
Buttons looked like buttons. Cards had proper borders and shadows. Navigation was functional. Forms had labels. The individual UI components were polished — often more polished than what a developer without design instincts would produce by hand. v0 and bolt.new were particularly strong here, generating components that could pass for professional design system output.
Speed: A+
This is the obvious one, but it's worth stating plainly. The fastest tool (v0) produced a complete, deployable page in under 90 seconds. Even the slower tools topped out at about 10 minutes. That's 10 minutes from nothing to a live page with a hero section, feature grid, testimonials, pricing, and a footer. The speed advantage is real and it's not small.
Technical foundations: B+
Semantic HTML was solid across the board. Most tools generated proper heading hierarchies, used alt attributes on images (though the alt text was generic), and produced accessible markup. Several included basic meta tags and Open Graph properties without being asked. The code quality from tools like v0 and Cursor was clean enough to build on.
What AI Gets Dangerously Wrong (Every Single Time)
Here's where it falls apart — and "dangerously" is the right word, because the failures are invisible unless you know what to look for. The page looks professional. It feels like a real landing page. But it's missing the things that actually make people convert.
Headlines: D+
All 10 tools produced some variation of the same headline structure: "[Verb] Your [Noun] With [Adjective] [Noun]." Streamline Your Projects With Intelligent Tracking. Supercharge Your Workflow With Smart Management. Elevate Your Team's Productivity With Seamless Collaboration.
These headlines are grammatically perfect and semantically empty. They describe a category, not a product. They communicate no specific outcome, no concrete benefit, no reason to choose Trackline over any other tool. Not one of the 10 tools generated a headline with a number in it. Not one mentioned the target audience by name. Not one made a specific, falsifiable claim. Every headline was safe. And safe headlines are invisible headlines.
Value proposition: F
This is the biggest and most consistent failure. None of the 10 pages articulated why someone should choose Trackline over Jira, Linear, Asana, or any other project management tool. The AI knew what the product did but had no concept of why it matters — what specific pain it solves better than alternatives, for what specific audience.
This isn't surprising. A value proposition requires competitive context, audience insight, and positioning decisions that don't exist in a product description. It requires knowing what your competitors are saying and deliberately saying something different. AI doesn't have that context, and no prompt can fully provide it — because positioning is a strategy, not a text generation task.
Social proof: D
Nine out of 10 tools either generated fake testimonials with stock-photo-style names ("Sarah K., Product Manager") or generic trust indicators ("Trusted by 10,000+ teams"). One tool was honest enough to leave the testimonial section with placeholder text. The fake testimonials were the worst outcome — they don't just fail to build trust, they actively erode it. A visitor who suspects the testimonials are fake trusts your entire page less.
The tools that generated customer logos used real company logos without permission — a legal liability that could get your page taken down. AI doesn't understand that social proof needs to be real. It understands that social proof sections exist in landing page layouts, so it fills them with content that looks like social proof. The shape is right. The substance is a liability.
Copy specificity: D-
The body copy across all 10 pages read like it was written for a product category, not a product. "Trackline helps teams collaborate more effectively" — so does literally every project management tool. "Stay on top of your projects with real-time updates" — that's a feature, not a benefit, and it's a feature every competitor also has.
AI writes copy at the category level because that's what it was trained on. The AI sameness problem isn't a bug in any specific tool — it's a structural consequence of how language models work. They produce the statistical average of all the landing pages they've seen. And the average is, by definition, generic.
Persuasion arc: D
Every page had sections. None of them had a story. The sections were placed in a "standard" order — hero, features, how it works, testimonials, pricing, CTA — but there was no narrative logic connecting them. No persuasion arc. No escalation of conviction. Just a list of sections that happen to be on the same page.
High-scoring pages build a case. Each section answers a question the previous section raised. "What is this?" → "How does it work?" → "Can I trust it?" → "What does it cost?" → "What should I do next?" AI puts these sections in roughly the right order, but the transitions between them are non-existent. Each section is a standalone unit with no awareness of what comes before or after.
The 41-Point Ceiling
Forty-one. That's the average score of a landing page built entirely by AI in 2026. It's not terrible — it's roughly average for all pages in our dataset. But "average" is a devastating grade for a landing page. Average means forgettable. Average means a bounce rate that eats your ad budget. Average means a visitor who compares your page to two competitors and can't remember which was which.
And 41 appears to be a ceiling, not a floor. Giving the AI tools longer prompts, more detailed product descriptions, and specific instructions about audience and positioning didn't meaningfully move the scores. The improvements were marginal — a point here, a point there — because the failures aren't about insufficient input. They're about the things AI fundamentally doesn't do: strategic differentiation, authentic social proof, and the emotional logic that turns a page into a persuasive argument.
The Right Way to Use AI Page Builders
None of this means AI page builders are useless. They're genuinely useful — but only if you understand what you're getting and what you need to add.
Here's the workflow that actually works:
Step 1: Do the strategic work first. Before you open any AI tool, write down three things in a plain text document: your specific target audience, your value proposition (what makes you different from the top 3 alternatives), and the single most important action you want the visitor to take. If you can't write those three things clearly, no AI tool will save you. If you can, you've already done the hardest part.
Step 2: Use AI for the scaffold. Let the AI generate your page structure, layout, and component design. This is where it excels. Accept the visual output. Accept the section ordering. Accept the responsive design. Don't fight the AI on aesthetics — it's probably better at visual design than you are (no offense).
Step 3: Rewrite every word. This is non-negotiable. Open the AI-generated page and replace every headline, every subheadline, every CTA, every body paragraph. Use the AI copy editing workflow if you want AI assistance with the rewriting — but the words need human judgment behind them. Especially the headline, subheadline, and CTA, which carry 55% of the page's weight.
Step 4: Add real proof. Remove every fake testimonial, every placeholder logo, every invented statistic. Replace them with real customer quotes, real usage numbers, real results. If you don't have testimonials yet, remove the section entirely. An empty page is better than a page with fake proof — because fake proof actively damages trust.
Step 5: Score it. Run the finished page through roast.page and see where it actually lands. The AI scaffold plus human strategy should push you well above 41. If it doesn't, the feedback will tell you exactly which dimensions need work.
The Bottom Line
AI page builders have made it trivially easy to ship a landing page that looks professional. They've also made it trivially easy to ship a landing page that converts like garbage while looking great doing it. The danger isn't that AI builds bad pages — it's that AI builds pages that seem good enough to ship as-is.
The visual quality is a trap. It makes you think the page is done when the page is actually a scaffold — a well-designed container with no persuasive content inside it. The container is the easy part. It always was. The hard part is the words, the proof, the positioning, and the strategic clarity that turns a visitor into a customer. AI can't do that yet. Maybe it will someday. But in April 2026, the human layer is still the difference between a 41 and an 80.
