How does it work?

Google AI Overviews now appear on 30–48% of US queries (SE Ranking, 2025). When they appear, click-through to organic results drops 40–60%. The new winning move isn't ranking #1 organically — it's being cited inside the AI Overview itself.

The AI Overview Checker tests which buyer-intent queries in your category trigger an Overview, which sources Google cites, and whether your page makes the cut. The checker runs the same query patterns Google tends to surface Overviews for — informational ("how do I X"), comparison ("X vs Y"), and "best of" lists.

What an AI Overview citation actually requires

Across our analysis of 200+ AI Overview citations, the cited pages share a recognizable pattern:

  • Direct, specific answers in the first 100 words. Not "let's explore the question of..." Direct: "The answer is X. Here's why..."
  • FAQ-style headings. Pages with Q&A formatting are cited 3–5x more often than essay-format pages.
  • Structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, BreadcrumbList). Schema markup gives Google's extraction model a clean signal — pages with valid schema are cited disproportionately.
  • Recent dateModified. AI Overviews favor recently-updated pages, especially for time-sensitive queries.
  • Authoritative source pattern. Pages on domains with established topical authority are cited more often than equally-good pages on new domains.

What we test

10 likely-AI-Overview queries in your category — informational, comparison, and best-of patterns. For each, we report whether an Overview appeared, which sources were cited, where you ranked organically (if at all), and what description Google used. The result: a clear map of where you're winning, where competitors are taking the answer, and what specifically to fix.

Sample insight

"AI Overview triggers on 6/10 queries — you're cited on 1."

Google surfaces an Overview on 6 of your 10 buyer queries. You appear in 1 of those 6. Across the 5 you're missing, the cited sources are 4 competitor pages and 1 review-site listing. Add FAQ schema with the exact buyer question phrasing — pages with that pattern are cited 3–5x more often.

Common questions

Are AI Overviews replacing organic SERPs?

Not entirely — they appear on 30–48% of queries, mostly informational and comparison. Transactional queries ('buy X') still typically show classic SERPs. But the queries with Overviews are growing and the click-through gap is widening for affected queries.

What's the relationship between organic rank and Overview citation?

Looser than expected. Pages cited in Overviews are often not in Google's top 3 organic. Google's extraction model evaluates content fit for the answer, not just authority. A specific, well-structured page on a smaller domain can outrank larger competitors for Overview citation.

How do I get cited in an AI Overview?

Three highest-leverage actions: (1) write direct, specific answers in the first 100 words of your page, (2) use FAQ-style headings matching exact buyer question phrasing, (3) add valid FAQPage and HowTo schema. These three account for the majority of citation pattern fits we see.

Does featured snippet optimization help?

Partially. The pattern that wins featured snippets (direct answers, lists, tables) overlaps significantly with the AI Overview pattern, but isn't identical. Overviews favor more conversational phrasing and longer surrounding context. Optimizing for one helps the other ~60% of the time.

How quickly do AI Overview citations change?

Faster than classic SERPs. We've seen citation patterns shift within days of content changes. Google appears to update Overview source selection more frequently than its main ranking model. This works in your favor: changes you make today can show up in Overviews within 1–2 weeks.
