Google AI Overviews now appear on 30–48% of US queries (SE Ranking, 2025). When they appear, click-through to organic results drops 40–60%. The new winning move isn't ranking #1 organically — it's being cited inside the AI Overview itself.
The AI Overview Checker tests which buyer-intent queries in your category trigger an Overview, which sources Google cites, and whether your page makes the cut. The checker runs the same query patterns Google tends to surface Overviews for — informational ("how do I X"), comparison ("X vs Y"), and "best of" lists.
What an AI Overview citation actually requires
Across our analysis of 200+ AI Overview citations, the cited pages share a recognizable pattern:
- Direct, specific answers in the first 100 words. Not "let's explore the question of..." Direct: "The answer is X. Here's why..."
- FAQ-style headings. Pages with Q&A formatting are cited 3–5x more often than essay-format pages.
- Structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, BreadcrumbList). Schema markup gives Google's extraction model a clean signal — pages with valid schema are cited disproportionately.
- Recent dateModified. AI Overviews favor recently-updated pages, especially for time-sensitive queries.
- Authoritative source pattern. Pages on domains with established topical authority are cited more often than equally-good pages on new domains.
What we test
10 likely-AI-Overview queries in your category — informational, comparison, and best-of patterns. For each, we report whether an Overview appeared, which sources were cited, where you ranked organically (if at all), and what description Google used. The result: a clear map of where you're winning, where competitors are taking the answer, and what specifically to fix.
